Dirk Tanis Jr- Owner, Itani Development and Ditani Construction
Before: Dirk is a career entrepreneur who has founded, owned and successfully exited several companies ranging from restaurants to river outfitters. Originally from Columbia, SC, Dirk has lived in many different parts of the US; he also spent part of his childhood overseas. Mr. Tanis is a proud graduate of the University of South Carolina-Columbia (BA), and Appalachian State University (MSci); Before getting into construction and development, Dirk founded, grew and sold three health science companies, as well as a successful restaurant and brewery in Tega Cay, South Carolina; He has also owned multiple brands with products that achieved worldwide distribution; several different products that he researched, developed, formulated, manufactured and brought into commerce have generated eight-figure dollar revenues, while another product he developed generated over $200 million in sales in the United States and EU. Mr. Tanis developed a diverse skill set within the health science realm: analytical method and manufacturing process development, setting up manufacturing lines and cGMP facilities, Pharma R&D (new molecules, solids and liquids), sourcing, compounding, procurement and implementation of pharmaceutical process machinery and analytical machinery, risk assessment, international and domestic business development, development of packaging and product strategy, and the handling of regulatory audits.
Now: Itani Development specializes in the acquisition/re-positioning/development and sale of residential and multifamily real estate assets with holding periods of several months to several years; Ditani construction specializes in all aspects of residential construction, ranging from single- and multifamily renovations to building new single-family/townhome residential developments.
Dirk is a Licensed North Carolina Residential General Contractor and a member of the City of Tega Cay Board of Zoning Appeals; on the development side, he is an expert in investment asset acquisition/disposition, planning and zoning intricacies, Geographic Information Systems and Science (GIS and GIScience), residential site and infill development of SF/townhome communities, site project management, portfolio asset management/ownership (up three dozen properties at a time and 100+ rental units), and multifamily/single family repositioning and investment strategy. On the construction end, Mr. Tanis is very hands-on, and often does a fair amount of the necessary construction on his own projects. While he specializes in the ground-up new construction of SFH and townhomes along with the associated planning, infrastructure and site development, Dirk also has considerable experience with the associated work/execution sphere, ranging from the installation or repair of anything inside,attached or detached from a residential or commercial structure, large concrete/masonry projects, extensive site drainage systems, grading, erosion control, landscape architecture, moisture barrier systems, and the large-scale portfolio renovation of single and multifamily properties; all of which are/were owned by Itani.
Dirk enjoys spending free time with his family; his wife, Rachel, is a Nurse Practitioner, while his daughter Gwendolyn is an accomplished competitive swimmer. When he isn’t working, the beach, kayaking, fishing, reading, lifting weights and traveling are some of Dirks’ favorite things to do.
